  • While the State of Alabama has operated an unclaimed property program since 1971, the program has only been a part of the Treasurer's Office since 1996.
  • The role of the program is to (1) act as a consumer protection agency for those individuals and businesses with lost assets (2) indemnify businesses and allow them the opportunity to avoid the liability and expense of maintaining these assets on their books (3) promote awareness of the program and (4) receive, evaluate & pay claims accurately and efficiently.
  • Since 1996, over 324,000 claims have been paid and over $165 million has been returned by the state to the rightful property owners or their heirs.

  • Since 1996, residents of Jefferson County, Alabama alone have received payments of over $32 million from 61,785 claims.
